The creation of the Pontiac GTO inspired Ford and Chrysler to enter the high-performance market, an era that extended into the early 1970s until Federal emissions standards choked-off performance. GTO went into production in 1964 on the Le Mans platform and in 1966 became a separate Pontiac Model. The "A" body intermediate line was restyled that year, gaining more curvaceous styling with kicked-up rear fender lines for a "Coke-bottle" look. This story talks about the genesis of the GTO and engineers such as John DeLorean. The GTO is arguably recognized as THE car that started the Muscle Car Era.
